How to Create a Vision Board That Actually Works

Most of us have made a vision board at some point. We cut out pretty pictures, glued them down, felt inspired for about a week… and then it ended up behind the closet door.

That’s not a willpower problem. Most vision boards are made as decoration instead of as a tool.

If you’re starting over, whether after divorce, a breakup, or a season that changed everything, a vision board can be one of the most grounding things you make this year. It’s a visual reminder that your future is something you get to design, not something that just happens to you.

Here’s how to make one for 2027 that you’ll actually use.

Step 1: Get Clear on What You Want (and How You Want to Feel)

Before you touch a magazine or open Canva, grab a notebook and spend 15 minutes with these questions:

  • What areas of my life do I want to grow this year? (Home, money, health, friendships, career, adventure, love, rest)
  • How do I want to feel by the end of 2027?
  • What’s one word I want to guide this year? (Peace. Brave. Home. Expand.)
  • What’s one thing I’ve been putting off because I didn’t feel ready?

Then group what you wrote into 3–5 categories. Fewer categories make a more focused board.

Gentle note: If you’re early in a hard season and don’t know what you want yet, that’s okay. Build your board around how you want to feel instead. Calm, safe, rested, and hopeful are all goals worth working toward.

Step 2: Choose Your Format and Gather Supplies

Physical board: A corkboard or poster board, glue or pins, scissors, magazines, printed photos, and a few markers.

Digital board: Canva works beautifully for this. Search “vision board” or “collage” templates and drag in your own photos and words. A digital board can double as your phone or laptop wallpaper, so you see it dozens of times a day.

Step 3: Pick Images and Words That Feel Like You

This is where most boards go generic. Skip the images you think you’re supposed to want and pick the ones that make something in your chest go “yes.”

Look for:

  • Images that capture a feeling, not just a thing. A woman sipping coffee on a balcony can mean “slow mornings that belong to me.”
  • Places you want to go, especially if you’ve never let yourself travel solo.
  • Words and affirmations you need to hear. Keep them short and in the present tense.

  • I am becoming the woman I was always meant to be.
  • I trust my timing.
  • I release what no longer belongs to me.
  • I choose peace. I choose the life I’m dreaming of.
  • More of me, everywhere I go.
  • My next chapter belongs to me.

Step 4: Arrange It With Purpose

There’s no wrong layout, but these three work well:

  • By category: Give each life area its own section.
  • Center focus: Put your word of the year or your biggest goal in the middle, with everything else around it.
  • Mood collage: Overlap images and notes freely for a layered, “this is my life” feel.

Leave a little blank space. You’re allowed to add new dreams partway through the year.

Step 5: Put It Where You’ll See It Every Day

A vision board only works if you look at it. Hang it near your mirror, desk, or coffee maker, or set the digital version as your lock screen.

Each morning, give it 60 seconds. Pick one image and ask: What’s one small thing I can do today that moves me toward this?

Step 6: Turn the Vision Into Action

Your board shows you the destination. Small, consistent steps get you there.

  • Break each goal into steps you could take this month.
  • Write one action next to each image (sticky notes work great).
  • Celebrate the small wins: the solo dinner you booked, the boundary you held, the savings account you opened.
  • Review your board on the first of each month and adjust.

Bonus: Refresh Your Board as You Grow

You’re going to change this year, and your board should change with you. Every few months, take down what no longer fits, add what’s newly calling you, and notice what you’ve already done. That’s your proof that you’re moving forward.

Your 2027 Starts With What You Choose to See

A vision board won’t change your life on its own, but it’s a daily reminder of who you’re becoming and why it matters. You don’t have to have the whole year figured out. You just have to decide what you want to move toward, and take the next brave step.

And when it’s done, share it with the hashtag #FearlessFemme. I’d love to see it. 💗
